Body Pieces:

With a 3.5 mm crochet hook, make 3 pieces in Color A and 3 pieces in Color B, for a total of 6 pieces.

Row 1: Ch 2, 2 sc in 2^nd ch from hook. (2)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in each st. (4)

Turn to work into the ends of each row, ch 1, work 1 sc into the top loop* of the edge st of each row to Row 1, ch 1, work 1 sc into the top loop of the edge st of each row to Row 35, ch 1, Fasten off leaving a long tail of at least 5”/ 12.5 cm. (70 sc sts) [* working the stitches into only one loop creates a clean edge with no holes.]

TIP: to get your hook into the loop, do not try to insert the end of the hook, but rather turn your hook to catch the loop with the tip of the hook and then rotate the hook around to the correct position. (See photos below; first 2 photos show loops you will be working into.)

Embroidery:

Once all 6 pieces have been completed, it is time to embroider the design.

You will use Color A on the Color B pieces and Color B on the Color A pieces. Begin by cutting a length of yarn 36” / 90 cm for each piece of the pumpkin.  

Step 1: Insert needle from back to front at base of Row 9 in the stitch just right of center*, and pull through, leaving a 4” / 10 cm tail on the back side. (photo 1) [*there is not a single center stitch, you will be working in the middle 2 sts.]

Step 2: Insert needle through one loop 2 rows up, and 2 sts to the right inserting needle from right to left. (photo 2)

Step 3a: Insert needle back into the same st as step 1, this time from front to back, and then     

Step 3b: insert needle into the next st to the left from back to front. (photo 3)

Step 4: Insert needle through one loop 2 rows up, and 2 sts to the left inserting needle from right to left. (photo 4)

Step 5a: Insert needle back into the same st as step 3b, this time from front to back

Step 5b: insert needle into the next st to the right (same st as step 1 and 3a) from back to front. (photo 5). Insert hook from front to back into same st as 5a. (photo 6)

Repeat steps 1 – 5 three more times, beginning each new repeat at the base of the stitch to the right of center 2 rows above Step 2. (photos 7 & 8)

Step 6: Insert needle into the same st as step 1 from back to front. (photo 9)

Step 7: Insert needle under the bar created between the sts in step 5 (photo 10) and each bar to the top. (photos 11 & 12)

Step 8: Insert needle through one loop of a center st one row above the last leaf row. (photo 13)

Step 9: Holding your yarn above the stitch to keep it from pulling, insert needle back through each bar to the bottom. (photo 14) Release hold on yarn and gently pull the excess to the bottom. (photo 15).

Insert needle into the st on the left to pull yarn to back. Tie your ends together to keep the stitching from coming loose. No need to weave them in.  Repeat on all pieces.

Assembly:

Using a 2.75 mm hook to create tight seams, place one color A piece and one color B piece RS facing while making sure that the embroidery details are facing the same direction on both pieces. Working into the back loop of the edge stitches (which will be the loop on the WS of each piece; the loop closest to you and the loop farthest from you) sl st the two panels together from the top of the piece to the bottom. Fasten off leaving a tail of 4” / 10 cm in length.

Continue to add pieces, alternating between color A and color B until all panels are joined. On the last seam, Fasten off leaving a 6” / 15 cm tail.

Tie all tails, except the last 6” / 15 cm tail, together to secure. Turn the pumpkin RS out and stuff all of the tails except the last 6” / 15 cm tail into the center of the pumpkin. Using the 6” / 15 cm tail and a tapestry needle, seam the bottom of the pumpkin closed weaving the needle through the stitches to secure. Weave tail to the inside of the pumpkin. Reaching through the top, tie the last tail to another tail to secure.  

Stuff the pumpkin with fiber filling making sure to push it into the center of each piece to achieve the desired shape.

Make sure all ends are on the inside of the pumpkin before moving on to the stem.

Stem

With Color C, and a 3.5mm hook, attach with a sl st into any st at the top of the pumpkin.

Round 1: ch 1, sc around working 2 sc per section, do not join. (12 sts)

Round 2: sc around.

Round 3: [sc2tog, sc 4] 2 times. (10 sts)

Rounds 4 – 10: sc around.

Fasten Off leaving a 2”/ 5 cm tail. Using a tapestry needle and the tail, seam top of stem closed.

Indent the center of the pumpkin

With a piece of yarn approx. 6-8” (15-20 cm) in either color A or color B threaded onto a tapestry needle. Insert the needle through the top of the pumpkin, just before the first round of the stem, and out through the bottom of the pumpkin, making sure a length of tail stays at the top of the pumpkin. Then, insert the yarn one st over back through the bottom of the pumpkin and out through the top. Pull snug to create an indent in the center of the pumpkin. Repeat 2 to 3 more times, in various places around the stem to give the pumpkin an even look. To avoid seeing the yarn carried across the top of the pumpkin, insert the needle one st over, then back out in the new location on the top, and then repeat. Once you are satisfied with the shape of your pumpkin, weave in all ends.

Leaves (make 2)

With Color D and a 3.5mm

Row 1: Ch 8, sc in 2^nd and 3^rd ch from hook, hdc 2, dc, 2 dc in next st, 5 dc in last st, turn to work down the back of the ch, 2 dc in next st, dc, hdc 2, sc in last 2 sts. (19 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working into flo, sc 2, *hdc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next st, hdc, sc*, hdc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next st, hdc, 2 hdc in next st; repeat from * to *, 2 more times, sc in last st. (28 sts including ch-1 sps) 

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, working in blo, sc 2, sl st one row below, sc, 3 sc in ch-1 sp, sc, sl st 1 row below, hdc 2, dc, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, dc, sl st one row below, 3 dc in next st, ch 2, sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, 3 dc in next st, sl st one row below, dc, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, dc, hdc 2, sl st one row below, sc, 3 sc in ch-1 sp, sc, sl st one row below, sc 2, sl st to first st of row, ch 3, sc in 2^nd and 3^rd ch from hook, sl st to body of leaf.
