Crocheting a boho jar topper is honestly so fun and way easier than it looks! It uses basic crochet stitches, and if you just follow the pattern it’s simple enough.

These crochet jar covers are a great stash buster, you only need 30 to 60 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn, which is perfect for using up leftover bits. You’ll also need a 4 mm (G) crochet hook, and of course, a glass jar.

The pattern comes in 3 sizes, so you’ll get the best fit no matter what kind of jar you’re working with. I’ll even walk you through creating little tassels, which totally make the whole thing pop with that boho charm.

• Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton, weight (4) worsted, 100% cotton, 180 yards/ 165 meters (3.5 oz/ 100 g) per ball. Approx. 30 (50, 60) yards required for each topper.

Free Crochet Pattern: Boho Jar Topper

Jar Topper

Leaving a starting tail of at least 3”, FSC 36 (36, 42) (or if you prefer, ch 37 (37, 43), sc in 2^nd ch and across), sl st in the first st to join in the round. The tail will be used to close the top of the round. (36 (36, 42) sts)

Round 1: Ch 1, sc (hdc, hdc) around, sl st to join.

Round 2: Ch 1, *sc, ch 2, sk 1*, repeat from * to * around, sl st to join. (18 (18, 21) sts)

Round 3: Ch 1, *sc, ch 4, sk ch-2 sp* repeat from * to * around, sl st to join. (18 (18, 21) sts)

Round 4: Sl st in first sc and each of the first 2 chs of the ch-4 sp, ch 1, *sc in ch-4 sp, ch 3* repeat from * to * around, sl st into the first sc of the round. (18 (18, 21) sts)

Use beginning tail to close the first round and check to make sure the piece fits on the top of your jar before proceeding.

You will now begin to work in sections to create the points.  Follow the instructions for your size.

Small

Row 5: Ch 1, *sc in first st, sc in ch-4 sp*; rep * to * two more times, turn. (6 sts)

Row 6: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc across to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn. (4 sts)

Row 7: Ch 1, sc across, turn.

Row 8: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc2tog, turn. (2 sts)

Row 9: Ch 1, sc across, turn. (2 sts)

Row 10: Ch 1, sc2tog. (1 st)

Fasten Off.

Reattach yarn into the same st as the last sc of Row 5 with a sl st.

Rep Rows 5 – 11 five more times (6 total points), do not fasten off last point.

Medium

Row 5: Ch 1, *hdc in first st, hdc in ch-4 sp*; rep * to * two more times, turn. (6 sts)

Connecting the Points

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in end of point, *ch 6 (7, 8), working into the next point, sl st into the edge of Row 9 (10, 10), sc in edge of row 10 (11, 11), (sc, ch 1, sc) in bottom of point*, repeat from * to * around to last point. Ch 6 (7, 8), working into the last point, sl st into the edge of Row 9 (10, 10), sc in edge of row 10 (11, 11), sc in same st as first st of round, ch 1, sl st in first st to join.

Note: It is normal for the points to curl under. They will lay flat on the jar when they are finished.

Round 2: *Working behind the ch of Round 1, sc into the edge of Row 10 (11, 11), sl st into the edge of row 9 (10, 10), ch 6 (7, 8), (sc, ch 2, sc) in the ch 1 sp on bottom of next point*, repeat from * to * around to last point, sl st in first st to join.

Fasten off.

Weave in all loose ends.

Tassels:

You will be adding tassels to two different spots on the jar topper.

The upper tassels will be between the points, and the lower tassels will be at the bottom of the points.

Upper Tassels

Cut 18 (18, 21) pieces of yarn approximately 9 (12, 16)” in length.

Using 3 pieces for each tassel: fold the pieces in half, insert your hook from WS to RS into the space between two points, lay the center of the yarn over the hook, and pull a loop through. Place the ends of the yarn through the loop created and pull tight (see photos). The “knot” of the tassel will be on the WS.

Repeat for each space between points all the way around. (6 (6, 7) tassels)

Lower Tassels

Cut 18 (18, 21) pieces of yarn approximately 6 (9, 12)” in length, insert your hook from RS to WS in the ch-2 sp at the bottom of the point and repeat instructions for attaching the tassels. The “knot” of the tassel will be on the RS.

Joining the tassels.

Split the top tassel ends into two sets of three and weave one set through each side of the chains as shown in the photo below.

Insert your hook upward through the knot of the tassel at the bottom of the point, and pull the 3 pieces of yarn from each side of the tassel through.

Repeat around. All tassel ends should now be coming out at the bottom of the points.  Place topper on your jar and trim tassels to desired length.
