How to crochet a baby blanket

This crochet baby blanket free pattern walks you step by step through creating a modern, unique blanket using cable and shell stitches.

The pattern is written for intermediate crocheters and uses front/back post stitches to build an intricate, textured fabric in a clear, repeatable way.

You’ll need 1100–1150 yards of worsted weight 4 yarn and a 5.5 mm (I) crochet hook, or a hook to match gauge.

• Yarn Bee Denim in Color, weight (4) worsted, 50% acrylic / 50% cotton, 157 yds / 144 m, 3.5 oz / 100 g per skein; 1100 yds (7 skeins) required.          
• US I / 5.5 mm crochet hook (or size to obtain gauge)

• Needle for weaving in ends

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Tassels: Make 12 (See photos)

• Using a Tassel maker, a DVD case, or another item of about 5.5” in length, wrap yarn around 35 times.
• Slip loops off carefully and insert a 10” – 12” length of yarn through the top of the loops.

• Approximately 1” from the top of the loops tie an 8” to 10” piece of yarn making sure it is tight and will not slip off.  Cut bottom loops of tassel.

• Tie top strap loosely on top with a round and under.
• Attach to blanket.  Insert top straps into the space between the 2^nd and 3^rd TR of the Sprout Stitch and pull through.
• Using a crochet hook, pull one strand through the top of the tassel.
• Tie two strands in a knot and pull through the center of the tassel with a needle.

• Attach one tassel at each Sprout stitch across on both sides of blanket.
• Steam tassels and trim bottoms to straight.
