Special Stitches
Invisible decrease
When working a decrease (dec) in amigurumi, it is suggested that you use an invisible decrease to prevent holes and give a seamless look. To work an invisible decrease, insert the hook under the front loop only of the first stitch and then under the front loop only of the second stitch, YO and pull a loop through both sts, YO and pull through both loops on the hook.
Invisible join
After working the last sc, do not ch, cut the yarn leaving a 4” tail. Pull the tail straight up through the center of the last sc and thread onto a tapestry needle. Working into the first st of the round, insert the needle from front to back under both top loops of the stitch. Insert the needle back down into the center of the last st made; this is the same spot the yarn tail came out of, and pull gently to close the gap.
Forward Stitch
The loops created on the front of the work by back post single crochet stitches.
Notes
- Cupcake is worked top down in continuous rounds without joining.
- Use a st marker to mark the first st of the round and move up with each new round.

Free Crochet Pattern: Watermelon Cupcake
Frosting
With C1
Rnd 1: 5 sc into a magic circle, pull tight but do not join. (5 sts)
Rnd 2: sc around.
Rnd 3: Inc around. (10 sts)
Rnd 4: bpsc around.
Rnd 5: *inc, sc; rep from * around. (15 sts)
Rnd 6: bpsc around.
Rnd 7: *inc, inc, sc; rep from * around. (25 sts)
Rnd 8: bpsc around.
Rnd 9: *sc, inc; rep from * around to last st, sc. (37 sts)
Rnd 10: bpsc around.
Rnd 11: *sc 4, inc; rep from * around to last 2 sts, sc 2. (44 sts)
Rnd 12: bpsc around.

Cake
With C2
Join yarn with a sl st 5 sts before the join on Rnd 14.
Rnd 1: sc in same st as the sl st and each st around. (44)
Rnds 2 – 8: sc around. Begin stuffing with poly-fil, continue adding as you work, making sure to stuff firmly and shape the cupcake as you go.
Rnd 9: sc blo around.
Rnd 10: *sc 8, dec; rep from * to last 4 sts, sc 4 (40)
Rnd 11: *sc 6, dec; rep from * around. (35)
Rnd 12: *dec, sc 5; rep from * around. (30)
Rnd 13: *sc 4, dec; rep from * around. (25)
Rnd 14: *dec, sc 3; rep from * around. (20)
Finish stuffing with poly-fil. To make sure your bottom is flat, and your cupcake sits upright, push the center of the stuffing up to create an indent.
Rnd 15: dec around. FO leaving a 5” tail. Weave tail through all remaining sts, and pull tight to close.
Weave tail through the center of the bottom, through the indent created in the stuffing, and out through one of the stitches at the top of the cake section, pull tight. Insert the needle one stitch down from the stitch the needle came out of and weave the end in to secure.
Finishing The Frosting
With C1
You will be working a continuous spiral into the loops created all around the top of the cupcake with the bpsc sts.
Attach yarn with a sl st into the first forward st at the bottom of the icing on the cupcake.
Sl st into each forward st around. When you get to the last st, skip up to the next row of forward sts without cutting yarn. Sl st in each forward st all the way to the top. FO weave in ends.
Cupcake Liner
With C3
Rnd 1: 8 sc into a magic circle, pull tight but do not join. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: inc around. (16 sts)
Rnd 3: *inc, sc; rep from * around. (24 sts)
Rnd 4: *sc 2, inc; rep from * around. (32 sts)
Rnd 5: *inc, sc 3; rep from * around, sl st to first st of rnd to join. (40 sts)
You will now begin working in rows to create the upper part of the liner.
Row 1: ch 12, sc in 2nd ch and across, sl st in next 2 sts of Rnd 5.
Row 2: turn, sk 2 sl st, sl st blo across.
Row 3: ch 1, scblo across, sl st in next 2 sts of Rnd 5.
Row 4 – 39: Repeat Rows 2 and 3
Row 40: Repeat Row 2
Finish off leaving a 5” tail. Seam the blo of Row 40 to Row 1. Weave in ends.
Seeds
With C4
Cut a piece of yarn approx. 10” in length and thread onto a tapestry needle.
1: Insert needle into the space between two stitches where you want to start your seed, and out one to two stitches* over (or down**) from the space you inserted the needle. (See photo below for example.)
2: Pull yarn through leaving a tail on the end to weave in later.
3: Insert needle into the same stitches as step 1 above one to two more times***.
Once you have wrapped the number of times desired, insert needle back into the center of the cupcake and out in a new location. Repeat for the desired number of seeds.
*I alternated between having two stitches between and one stitch between to give the look of some seeds laying on the frosting and some seeds only partially showing out of the frosting. **Vary the location and angle of the seeds to your liking.
***Wrapping the yarn two times will look more like the edge of the seed, while wrapping three times will give the appearance of the flat front of the seed.
